If you have heart disease, you know the importance of taking every precaution to avoid exacerbating the problem. This is the time to take charge of your health and be an active participant in managing your heart condition. Your doctor can advise you and prescribe you medications, but the rest is up to you. There are exercises that increase your heart rate while not putting you at risk of overdoing it.

One way to help your heart is to perform exercises. Do this only under your doctor’s supervision. Heart disease can vary with severity from person to person. Consult your doctor on specific exercise programs so he can advise you on the level of intensity you should adhere to in your chosen exercise. Here are some exercises that you might want to consider:

  • Walking is a very low impact exercise that is a great starting point for many people who have not exercised for a while. You do not need to power walk to reap the benefits of walking. Just by moving your body for 15 minutes at a slow pace, you are pumping the blood through your body and strengthening your heart at the same time.
  • Swimming is a wonderful non-impact exercise for anyone. You do not need to be an Olympic swimmer to enjoy the benefits of this exercise. The pressure of the water helps your veins in sending blood back to your heart. Also, the buoyancy you experience relieves any pressure on your body’s joints. If you do not know how to swim, then purchase a kickboard and use that to stay afloat while kicking your legs. Any movement in water provides resistance to your body. Simply treading water will increase your heart rate. Plus, swimming is fun and keeps the body cool in hot weather!
  • Riding a bike is another wonderful non-impact exercise. You can control how fast you move and it also will increase your balance. Bike riding can become an intense workout if you increase resistance and length of the trip. Always take precautions such as wearing a helmet, having the proper reflectors on your bike, and educating yourself on the “rules of the road”.
