Leaving Varicose Veins Untreated

Doctors will often hear “I didn’t come in because they didn’t hurt” in regard to their patient’s varicose veins.

While this may seem reasonable, most people are not aware of the possible dangers of leaving varicose veins untreated. Just because there is no pain currently does not negate the possibility down the road. Let’s take a look at the possibilities:

Deep Vein Thrombosis is the most serious of the possibilities of conditions that can occur when you develop varicose veins. If a blood clot develops it can become life threatening if it breaks free from a leg and moves towards the heart, brain or lung.

Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of the veins just below the surface of the skin. The patient may experience redness, increasing tenderness, and ongoing pain or swelling in the legs.

Hyperpigmentation If left untreated, after a time varicose veins can leak excess blood into the tissues around the veins. This causes painful swelling and inflammation and sections of skin become darkly discolored.

Spontaneous Bleeding can occur as varicose veins tend to break down the walls of the skin over time. Even a scratch or small scrape can lead to excess bleeding.

Lipodermosclerosis Extended inflammation left unchecked can cause the tissue to become thicker, firmer and heavier. This leads to more pain and tenderness. It becomes more difficult to relax or move without pain.

Leg Ulcers chronically untreated venous insufficiency can lead to leg ulceration. This is when an area of the skin breaks down leaving the flesh uncovered and unprotected. Infection is highly probable and they are difficult to heal.

Dealing with vein issues when you first notice them is your best course of action. The earlier a Vein Specialist is able to diagnose and treat, the less invasive and more effective treatments can be.
