Is Massage a treatment for Varicose Veins?

We all know that feeling when muscles get tight and your body hurts. A therapeutic massage helps to work the knots out. So, many people wonder if massage would be a solution for the pain of varicose veins. The answer is no.

Why? Well, even though your legs are feeling pain and swelling as you might feel with overstrained muscles, the cause of the pain is different.

The uncomfortableness in your legs due to venous insufficiency is created by damaged veins. The valves inside of these veins are not working properly. This causes blood to pool inside the veins, creating the heavy, itchy, painful feeling. The increase in blood volume makes the vein walls weak due to increased pressure. Regular massage does not fix this problem like it does with tight muscles.

If you choose to get a body massage, be sure to inform the massage therapist of your condition.  Some massage therapists are trained on venous and lymphatic diseases and may offer you a different kind of massage that may offer you some relief.

If you are in pain due to varicose veins, the best solution is to contact a vein doctor such as the ones here at Tampa Cardiovascular Associates. The doctor can advise you on compression stockings, tips to alleviate pain at home, and also talk with you about your options in getting rid of the damaged veins. New technology has given way to easy, minimally invasive procedures that require no recovery time and are performed in the doctor’s office.
