Swelling of the legs, technically called edema, can be very uncomfortable, even painful at times. This is especially true during the hot summer months here in Florida. Edema can be caused by many factors including lifestyle choices and vein disease in the legs. Obesity, smoking, certain medications, lack of physical exercise and some diseases can all contribute to edema. We have some tips on how you can help to reduce the swelling of your legs.

Reduce the amount of sodium intake. Sodium will hold water in the cells of your body, causing an increase in pressure and swelling.

Compression stockings. Compression wear helps to support the veins in pushing blood back up to your heart. This takes the pressure off of your veins, assisting them in this important task. Your doctor may recommend a specific level of stocking for your condition.

Try to elevate your legs whenever possible. Prop your feet up on a chair or lie down and put a pillow under your feet. This uses gravity to your benefit.

Get up and get moving! Even a little exercise is beneficial. It gets your blood moving and will make you feel better. Non-impact exercises such as swimming, yoga, and walking are recommended. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time should be avoided.

Swelling of the legs and feet can indicate a serious medical condition and should not be ignored. While the above tips can help in reducing your discomfort, consulting with a physician to diagnose and treat the problem is imperative.
